A Tank is a A tank is an armoured fighting vehicle intended as a primary offensive weapon in front-line ground combat. Tanks combine heavy firepower (large cannon and machineguns), strong armour (very thick), and mobility (Tracks, big engine, and turret). The Museum has more than just tanks. Here are fifteen Museum vehicles. Can you tell what is a tank and what is not?

#1. CMP Radio
Not a Tank!
This is a Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) Truck. Canada produced over 880,000 trucks during World War 2.
This tspecific truck is a GM CMP Radio Van made in Oshawa Ontario. It is serial number 0000001.

#2. BMP 1
Not a Tank.
This is a Russian BMP-1. It is an Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) Although it has tracks and a turret like a tank, it is too lightly armoured, too lightly armed, and its role is to carry an infantry squad into battle.

#3. Cougar
Not a Tank
This is a Canadian Cougar AVGP (Armoured Vehicle General Purpose) used as a Tank Trainer. They were made in London Ontario.

#4. LAV III
Not a Tank.
This is a Canadian LAV III. Although it is better armed, armoured, and faster than any world war and cold war tanks, it is not armed or armoured enough for the modern era. Also, its role is to transport troops into battle and then support them with it s guns.

#5. M1917
Tank
This tank was built in 1917 at the end of World War 1. It is a copy of a French tank and is considered the earliest true tank. It has a crew of two and could be armeed with a machine gun or small gun.
It is the oldest tank at the Museum

#6. Hetzer
Not a tank!
This is a WW2 German Jadgpanzer 38 (also known as Hetzer). It is not a tank even though it has a big gun and lots of armour. It does not have a turret and it is a Tank Destroyer. It does not attack but is purely defensive.

#7. M113
Not a tank
This is a M113 Armoured Personal Carrier (APC). It is lightly armoured and does not carry weapons normally. Its role is to carry troops into battle.
On Tank Saturdays at the Museum, you can get a ride on one of these.

#8. Universal Carrier
Not a Tank
This is a British Universal Carrier. It is a Cargo Carrierand was not ment as a combat vehicle.
It is quite fast and fun to drive.

#9. T-54
Tank
This is a Russian T-54. It is often refered to as the first modern Main Battle Tank.

#10. Scorpion
Tank
This is a British Scorpion Light Tank. It holds the World Record for fastes Tan EVER! It can go 82Kph (51 mph)

#11. Hanomag
Not a tank
This is a German Sd.Kfz. 251 usually called a Honomag. This was designed to carry infantry in order to keep up with the German tanks in early World War 2. Although this one at the Museum mounts an impressive anti-tank gun. It is still lightly armouore. In fact, it does not even have a roof.

#12. Chieftain
Tank
Not just a tank but the biggest gun (120mm) and heaviest tank (60 tons) in the Museum collection. It is also the slowest moders tank at 40 km/h (25 mph).
This Chieftain is painted in a special Berlin cammoflague.

#13. Sheridan
Tank
This is a M551 Sheridan light tank from the Viet Nam era. It was amphibious and could be air dropped as well
It has a dual gun system that could fire either a regular tank round or a guided missile.

#14. Leopard 1
Tank
This is a German built tank used by Canada. It is a Leopard 1 C2. It served as the primary Canadian tank from the mid-1970s to the Afghanistan conflict when it was replaced by the Leopard 2.

#15. Ferret
Not a tank
This is a Ferret Reconnaisance vehicle. It is used to see what is ahead of the army. It is very fast and very small.
This vehicle is considered very fun to drive and can go just as fast in reverse as forward.
